Russia Deputy FM Visits Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah Before Departing Lebanon

BEIRUT (The Daily Star) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met with Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah Saturday as he wrapped up a two-day official visit to Lebanon before departing early Sunday for Turkey. Bogdanov also met the Resistance leader last year in a similar trip to the region.

A statement released by Hezbollah Saturday night said “Russian President Putin’s special envoy” met with Nasrallah to discuss the political developments in the region, with particular focus on Lebanon and Syria.

Bogdanov was accompanied by Russia’s Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin. Hezbollah’s international relations officer Ammar Musawi also participated in the meeting.

Also Saturday night, the Russian officials visited Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblatt at his residence in Clemenceau.

The meeting was attended by numerous PSP officials, notably the party’s vice president for foreign affairs Doureid Yaghi, the party’s Secretary-General Zafer Nasser, Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb, Health Minister Wael Abu Faour as well as Jumblatt’s son, Taymour.

Bogdanov arrived to Lebanon late-Thursday to participate in the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Russian-Lebanese diplomatic relations.

During his visit Bogdanov also met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam, Speaker Nabih Berri and former President Michel Sleiman.

He also held a joint press conference Friday with the head of Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc, MP Mohammad Raad.
