Putin has 88% approval rating – poll

MOSCOW. Oct 29 (Interfax) – Pollsters have said 88% respondents in a poll on October 24-27 expressed approval of President Vladimir Putin’s activities.

The Levada Center opinion studies group told Interfax that Putin’s approval ratings as based on surveys in September and January stood at 86% and 65% respectively.

The group said 11% of respondents in October’s poll were dissatisfied with Putin compared with 14% in September and 34% in January.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s performance had 68% approval in October’s survey compared with 71% in September and 48% in January. It was disapproved of by 30% of those questioned in October’s poll compared with 27% of respondents in September and 51% in January.

The performance of the Russian government as a whole was approved of by 64% and disapproved of by 34% of respondents in October’s poll. The performance of the State Duma had 56% approval while 42% were dissatisfied with it.

Levada Center also said 68% of respondents in October’s survey, compared with 54% of those in January’s poll, approved of the performance of their regional governors [or the mayor in Moscow]. The disapprovers made up 30% in October and 44% in January.

Also, 60% of respondents in October’s poll believed Russia was on the right path of development, 23% thought it was following the wrong path, and 17% were undecided.

Respondents were also asked to name five or six politicians they trusted most.

Putin topped the list with 60% support.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was second with 26%, followed by Medvedev (20%), Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (19%), Liberal Democratic leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky (12%), Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov (11%), head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill (6%), Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko (each with 4%), and A Just Russia Party leader Sergei Mironov (3%) and Putin’s chief of staff, Sergei Ivanov (each with 3%).

Twelve percent said there was no politician they trusted and 14% said they were not interested in politics.

Levada Center questioned 1,630 people in 45 Russian regions and said the survey had a margin of error of 3.4%.
