Iraq steps up security measures ahead of Ashura commemorations

Iraq stepped up security amid fears of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group launching major attacks as thousands of Shia worshipers flocked Monday to the shrine city of Karbala for an annual pilgrimage.

Weekend bombings in the Baghdad area killed at least 36 people, just days ahead of major Shia religious commemorations that face significant danger from militants, security and medical officials said.

Al-Baath Arab Socialist Party: Palestine will remain Syria’s central issue

Damascus, SANA – Regional Leadership of al-Baath Arab Socialist Party reiterated Syria’s permanent and principled stance in support for the Palestinian people’s right of self-determination, establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and maintain the right to return Homeland.

In a statement on the 97th anniversary of the ominous Balfour Declaration, the Party’s leadership stressed that Palestine will remain the essence of the pan-Arab cause and the central issue of the Syrian people. Lebanon: Who is smuggling money to the army kidnappers in Ersal?

The kidnappers of the Lebanese army soldiers on the outskirts of Ersal do not seem to be in a rush. They continue to blackmail the Lebanese government and have their demands met. Money and medical and food supplies have allowed them to continue their occupation of the barren areas surrounding Ersal, while the government is unable to give any assurances or guarantees to the families of the abductees. Syrian Army at the Gates of Khan Sheikhoun; Offensive in Al-Amariyya in Full Swing

The Syrian Arab Army’s offensive in southern Aleppo (at Al-‘Amariyya) is in full swing after bombarding Islamic Front (Jabhat Al-Islamiyya) positions near the Sheikh Sa’eed District. Earlier today, the SAA, backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF), captured the surrounding farms (Mazra’a Al-‘Amariyya) in northern Al-‘Amariyya, killing scores of Islamic Front fighters and destroying two vehicles loaded with doshkas. The SAA will attempt to capture Al-‘Amariyya in order to open a new supply route to troops entrenched in Aleppo. Egypt blows up houses for Sinai buffer zone

Egypt has started work on a controversial buffer zone by destroying homes along its border with the Gaza Strip, following some of the worst attacks on the army since President Mohamed Morsi was ousted last year.

Bulldozers began destroying several abandoned houses along the frontier on Wednesday, just days after armed men attacked an army post killing 31 soldiers in the area.

Lebanese military, Hizbullah and Syrian Arab Army Stop Nusra Infiltration

Lebanese security forces have exchanged fire with al-Qaeda-linked militants in the Bekaa Valley near the border with Syria.

Local sources said the clashes erupted outside the towns of Deir al-Ghazal and Qusaya on Wednesday when al-Nusra Front militants tried to infiltrate into Lebanon from Syria.
